EAF Slag Foaming Operations

This class covers both an introduction to slag foaming operations and also detailed analysis that will allow EAF operations to achieve good slag foaming operations over a wide range of slag chemistry.

Specific sections include:

· Introduction to slags

· Slag chemistry in the EAF

· Introduction to slag foaming

· Analysis of the slag foaming mechanism

· Why is slag foaming important?

· Tying slag foaming to other EAF process operations

· Effect of slag chemistry on slag foaming

· Effect of scrap chemistry on slag foaming

· Tying slag foaming to oxygen injection in the EAF

· Typical problems associated with slag foaming operations and solutions to these problems

· Understanding meltshop total slag management

· Quality issues related to slag foaming operations

EAF Maintenance

Description: This course will be focused on enhancing the attendee’s understanding of basic EAF operations along with the technologies typically applied in EAF steelmaking.

Maintenance requirements will be reviewed with respect to EAF electrical and mechanical components, as well as the importance of auxiliary equipment maintenance on optimum furnace performance.

In addition, one session will focus on the aspects of meltshop trouble-shooting and will be complemented with examples related to EAF operations.

The class will provide a good overview of the interaction between maintenance and operating requirements and will be useful to both operators and maintenance personnel alike.

· Outline of furnace components - mechanical, electrical, process related

· Review of conventional furnace design

· Review of electrical systems

· Review of mechanical systems

· Review of EAF refractory systems

· Review of furnace melt/refine cycle

· Arc furnace technologies and their Impact on EAF Productivity - – overview of steelmaking energy requirements, energy efficiency, slag foaming, auxiliary equipment, furnace delays, Maximizing power on time etc.

· Maintenance For EAF Electrical Components – maintenance requirements for EAF transformers and secondary electrical circuit components in the EAF

· Maintenance For EAF Mechanical Components – Maintenance of EAF mechanical components

. Maintenance of auxiliary equipment. Importance of equipment availability for optimum EAF operations.
