An
excellent
cost saving, productivity and steel quality tool.
NuFlux ladle flux system produces a thermally insulating, fluid, basic, efficient slag
with excellent metallurgical properties to maximize alloy recovery, minimize alloy fade,
and protect ladle refractories.
What are the benefits of using NuFlux at Furnace
Tap?
Minimize furnace slag carryover and add NuFlux to produce a usable ladle
slag with the following advantages:
- no need to skim provided that slag carryover is controlled.
- less artificial slag reagents required to build ladle slag.
- less heating required as slag is already present and molten.
- excellent thermal insulation provided by the foamed slag.
What are the benefits of using
NuFlux at the Ladle Metallurgy Facility?
Added before arcing, NuFlux creates controlled foaming during arc
reheating. This increases slag volume and generates an inert (CO/C02) atmosphere above the
steel, providing :
- quiet and stable arcing
- better heating efficiency
- lower electrode consumption
- better alloy recovery
- less alloy fade
- decreased ladle slag line refractory attack.
What is NuFlux?
NuFlux is a calcium carbide based ladle slag modifier that reduces the oxygen content
of your slag making high oxygen furnace slag into usable ladle slag. As a result of using
this product, alloy recoveries are improved and consumption of synthetic flux is
dramatically reduced.
Where is NuFlux used?
Our clients include integrated steel producers, mini-mills and steel foundry shops.
Nuflux can be added during furnace tapping to remove oxygen from furnace slag. It can
also be added during ladle metallurgy operations to reduce arc flare and improve arc
heating efficiency.
How does NuFlux work?
Oxides, primarily FeO and MnO, in the furnace slag or high oxygen ladle slag react with
the calcium carbide to produce iron, manganese and lime (CaO), as shown in the following
equations.

Why shouldn't I use straight calcium carbide?
Pure calcium carbide tends to only partially react after addition to the ladle. Upon
addition, the surface of the carbide particle reacts to form a protective layer of
CaO.
The remainder of the calcium carbide particle then reacts unpredictably and depends on the
removal of this CaO layer.
NuFlux has special additives that perpetuate the reactions in a controlled manner so as
to efficiently utilize the reductant to completion.
Why shouldn't I use aluminum based slag
conditioners?
Calcium carbide is a slower acting reductant than aluminum that does not tend to revert
phosphorus and silicon to the extent that aluminum does. Also, the carbide reaction
creates a basic reaction product (CaO) which increases the FeO and MnO activity allowing
them to be reduced to a greater extent than with aluminum for an equivalent oxygen
potential.
How do I implement
NuFlux?
The NuFlux blend is custom designed to suit your particular slag chemistry. Our
engineering team will review your slag chemistries and practices to design a custom blend.
